A search for criminal records associated with a candidate in jurisdictions outside of Canada.

What's checked? 

Whether criminal records are identified for the candidate in the relevant country, or whether no records are found. Coverage and detail vary by jurisdiction. Some countries maintain centralized databases; others require manual searches of regional courts or police records.

How does it work?

Records are obtained from local government authorities, court systems, police agencies, or authorized international data providers, depending on the country searched. Searches are conducted in compliance with local legal and privacy requirements and require the candidate's consent.

This check follows several steps:

Step 1: Submit request – The requestor submits the international check request.

Step 2: Contact candidate – The candidate is contacted to obtain consent, collect a baseline of information, and verify their identity. This can include their full name, contact information, address history, sex, and date of birth. The exact information requested may vary depending on whether other checks are ordered at the same time.

Note: For some countries, this baseline is enough to complete the check. For others where additional information or documents are required, the candidate will be contacted again by email to provide these items so the check can proceed.

Step 3: Request records – Once all the candidate information is received, records are requested from the relevant authority. Processing time depends on that country's process and the authority's response time.

Step 4: Review results – Once results are received, they're available for review. Results are returned as either Clear (no records found) or Review Required (one of more records found).

Pricing varies by country, based on the cost of accessing records through the relevant local authorities or data providers. 

When to use it?

For candidates who have lived, worked, or studied outside Canada. This extends screening coverage beyond domestic checks for internationally experienced hires.

Turnaround times

Turnaround time depends on the country searched and can range from 2 days to over 30 days. This reflects both how quickly the candidate provides the required information and how quickly the country's issuing authority processes the request. The investigation does not start until all requested information has been received from the candidate.
