Service Overview

A search of records from the Tribunal administratif du logement (TAL), Quebec's administrative tribunal for landlord-tenant disputes.

What's checked? 

Whether the individual has been named in housing-related cases filed with the TAL, covering matters such as unpaid rent, lease disputes, repossession claims, and eviction proceedings.

How does it work?

The TAL's official case registry, the plumitif, can only be searched by address, not by name. Trustii runs this search against the candidate's full address history, current and previous addresses as declared.

If a credit check or driver's license check is completed at the same time for the candidate, Trustii will also consider the addresses declared in those checks when searching the TAL database.

Why add TAL Decisions on SOQUIJ?

The base TAL check searches by address, so a case tied to an address the candidate didn't declare won't surface. SOQUIJ closes part of that gap with an independent, name-based search. It's not a full substitute since it only covers motivated judgments, but it adds a second layer of coverage the base check can't reach on its own.

When to use it?

Built for rental housing applications and roles where housing stability is relevant. Helps identify prior landlord-tenant disputes that could present financial or tenancy-related risk, supporting more informed tenant screening decisions.

What to keep in mind when reviewing SOQUIJ results

A few important points to keep in mind:

• Decisions published on SOQUIJ represent a small proportion of all cases handled annually by the TAL (generally less than 5%), as most cases are resolved without a reasoned judgment.
• A name-only search may return individuals with the same name, particularly when the name is relatively common. The information provided by the candidate should be reviewed to determine whether the record is likely associated with them or with another individual who shares the same name.
• When a SOQUIJ decision can be linked to the applicant with a high level of confidence, it is highlighted in yellow in the report.
