Configure Risk Profiles

Risk Profiles define the compliance requirements for each role in your organization. This article explains what a Risk Profile is, how to create and assign one, and how to edit an existing profile.

What is a Risk Profile?

A Risk Profile defines the compliance requirements for a specific type of worker: which verifications are required, how often they repeat and when reminders are sent.

Every workforce member must be assigned at least one Risk Profile to be included in automated compliance monitoring. Without one, no verifications run automatically for that individual, though you can still launch a verification manually at any time.

Example: A "Commercial Driver" Risk Profile might include a quarterly driving abstract, an annual criminal background check, and a Hazmat certification renewal every 3 years.

Create a Risk Profile

  1. Navigate to Risk Profiles
  2. Click Create Risk Profile.
  3. Enter a Name that reflects the role this profile applies to. Examples profile names include Commercial Driver or Finance Manager.
  4. Under Verification Services, click + Add services to select the verification services required for this role. You can search by service name or click the search box to view the available services. Select all that apply and confirm the selection by clicking Add services.
  5. Once added, each service appears in the list turned off by default. Toggle a service on to activate it for this Risk Profile and configure its settings.
  6. Select the Recurrence type for the service. See Recurrence types below.
  7. Set how often the check repeats in the Repeat every field.
  8. Set the Schedule before window. This determines how many days in advance of the due date Horizon sends a reminder to the workforce member. Set this window generously enough to allow time for completion.
  9. Repeat steps 5 through 8 for each additional service.
  10. Click Confirm creation.

Once saved, the Risk Profile can be assigned to workforce members immediately.

Recurrence types

Each verification service within a Risk Profile requires a recurrence type. This defines how and when the check repeats over time.

  • No Recurrence: A one-time check, run only once. Use for pre-hire screening or one-off compliance checks.
  • From a Specific Date: Repeats on a fixed calendar schedule. Set the frequency and the Schedule Before reminder window. Use for annual or regulatory checks tied to a fixed calendar date.
  • From Last Verification: Repeats automatically based on the completion date of the previous check. Use for ongoing monitoring where checks should always occur at a consistent interval after the last one.

Assign a Risk Profile

Risk Profiles are assigned to workforce members when their profile is created, or can be updated at any time.

  1. Navigate to Workforce > Members.
  2. Click the member's name to open their profile.
  3. Within the General tab, click Edit.
  4. Under Member information, select the appropriate Risk Profile(s) for their role.
  5. Click Save Changes.

Monitoring begins the next day at 9am based on the newly assigned profile.

Note: If a workforce member changes roles, update their Risk Profile promptly to ensure the correct verifications are running. Assigning a new Risk Profile triggers a reprocessing that evaluates the member against the updated rules.

Edit a Risk Profile

  1. Navigate to Risk Profiles.
  2. Click the profile in the list.
  3. Select Edit.
  4. Make the required changes.
  5. Save the profile.

Note: If you're unsure whether editing a Risk Profile will affect active monitoring for assigned workforce members, contact your Customer Success Manager before making changes.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What happens if I don't assign a Risk Profile to a workforce member?

Nothing will be monitored. A Risk Profile must be assigned for automated verifications to run and for compliance rules to apply to that individual.

Can I edit a Risk Profile after it's created?

Yes. You can update the services, recurrence settings, or Schedule Before window at any time. If you're unsure how a change will affect members already assigned to the profile, check with your Customer Success Manager first.

What's the difference between the three recurrence types?

No Recurrence runs a check once. From a Specific Date repeats on a fixed calendar schedule. From Last Verification repeats at a consistent interval measured from the previous check's completion date.

Can I assign more than one Risk Profile to a workforce member?

Yes, a workforce member can be assigned to multiple risk profiles at once.
