A work reference check assesses a candidate's past job performance through an interview with a reference they provide, typically a former manager, supervisor, or colleague.

What's checked?

The reference's relationship to the candidate, and their assessment of performance, reliability, work ethic, teamwork, communication style, and whether they would recommend the candidate for employment.

How does it work?

A Trustii screening agent conducts the interview using a consistent set of questions, so the feedback you receive is structured and comparable across candidates. You can use our default suggested questions or preset your own, up to a maximum of 4 questions.

Once the candidate provides their references, up to 4 contact attempts will be made over the 2 business days following receipt of the completed form from the candidate. These attempts may be made by phone, email, or text message, depending on the contact information provided, and will only take place on business days. If the attempts overlap with a weekend or statutory holiday, the timeline will be adjusted accordingly.

If the contact information provided is incorrect, or if the reference does not respond or return our call within this timeframe, we will contact the candidate to obtain an alternative reference or additional information. If no response is received following these attempts, the process will be considered complete, and the reference report will be provided to you based on the information available. We will keep you informed of any situation requiring your intervention.

Reference results are generated after the initial report, so they typically arrive later than the rest of your results.

How it differs from Employment Validation

A Work Reference provides insight into the candidate’s professional experience through feedback from someone who has worked with them, typically a former supervisor, manager, or colleague provided by the candidate. The questions, whether our defaults or your own, focus on the candidate's performance, reliability, work ethic, teamwork, and communication skills.

Employment Validation only confirms employment-related information, namely the employer, job title, and dates of employment. It does not include any questionnaire regarding the candidate’s behaviour or performance.

When to use it?

Adds documented insight into a candidate's on-the-job performance that isn't captured by a résumé or employment verification alone, useful when reliability and fit are part of your hiring decision.
